(ABC 6 NEWS) - In Passport to Mankato: We show you hidden gems around the Mankato area and all the fun that is to be had outdoors.
Downtown Mankato has many opportunities for nightlife and entertainment. New in 2011, you see something else to do downtown. Dotted along the streets are sculptures on display.
"The community has been so positive and supportive of this, " says Shannon Robinson with the Twin River Council for the Arts.
It is called the City Art Walking Sculpture Tour. 25 original sculptures were just put up in May. New ones, from a variety of artists, will be put on display every year.
"We have artists from across the United States and even one artist who's living in New York City but is from Thailand. We have artists from Colorado, from Arizona, from Florida, from Nebraska and then from Minnesota. It's a national sculpture walk," Robinson says.
Organizers hope the national talent will bring even more people to the up and coming downtown area.
"It's really exciting to see families, seniors, everyone is out there checking out the sculptures. We're really hoping it drives a new vitality into Mankato City Center." said Robinson.
Another interesting part of the tour is the People's Choice Award. Viewers of the art are invited to fill out a ballot, choosing their favorite sculpture, drop it in one of the marked boxes downtown and the artwork with the most votes will be displayed permanently downtown.
