(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's never easy when you're a senior and you know you've played the last home game of your high school career.
"Honestly, I don't even feel like a senior yet," Mayo running back Alex Proell said. "It hasn't sunk in for me yet, but it'll be rough when the season ends. I love football more than anything."
Proell hopes the season lasts at least another week, because his Mayo Spartans have a date with Owatonna Friday night in the Section 1AAAAA championship.
Mayo's season continues thanks to a win over rival John Marshall in the section semis last weekend, and it was especially sweet for Proell, who ran for 153 yards, and now has over 1300 on the season.
"We were just prepared, because we lost to them the first time we played them, and this time, we weren't going to let that slip by," Proell said.
"He's not a kid who has excellent speed or these jukey moves. He's just tough," Mayo head coach Donny Holcomb said. "Yards after contact has been his highlight through the season, and he's a super-hard worker."
Friday's game against Owatonna has a deja vu feeling, because just like their regular season loss to the Rockets, Mayo fell to the Huskies a few weeks ago.
"Everyone was hyped up about how we would never lose to a team twice in a row, because that's not us. We know we're a better team than that, and we proved it against JM, and now it's time to prove it against Owatonna," Proell said.
