(ABC 6 NEWS) -- As we hear more and more about the obesity epidemic, one local company is helping get people on track to a healthier weight.

Cybex International in Owatonna is a busy place these days.

"I think the fitness trends are going to continue. People know to have a healthy life you have to workout," said Art Hicks, President of Cybex International.

Leaders say they work to improve the world's health.

That attitude is what Tim Schmidt still believes in 30 years after he started working here.

"I've always been proud to make something to enrich other people that can help people. We've always made a product that's strong," said Schmidt.

Tim is just one of 300 or so employees at the Owatonna plant.

Strength equipment and Arc Trainers are made and there's a lot of parts that go into each machine.

From cutting the metal, welding it, painting it and making seats, about 160 machines are made every day.

Equipment is shipped around the world, but the focus was always and continues to be about keeping jobs in the U.S.

"Manufacturing in the U.S. has many advantages...we have the shortest lead times...we have all kinds of colors of equipment many of our competitors can't do that," said Hicks.

Something Tim Schmidt feels good about.

"Its been great to see the expansion here in America, they didn't move it anywhere," said Schmidt.

With that, he feels a sense of security and believes his welding days are far from over.

Cybex moved into their new facility in 2007, but the Cybex name has been in Owatonna since the 1980's after a merger.

The company also operates a plant in Massachusetts.
