(ABC 6 News) - More legal trouble for an Austin man.
Police say 39 year old Chad Sabanish was arrested Sunday afternoon for allegedly stealing city manhole covers, hoping to sell them for scrap.
Investigators say Sabanish was seen driving out of a Public Works storage area, and several manhole covers were later found in the trunk of his car.
The covers were not removed from city streets.
When stopped by police and asked why he was taking the manhole covers, Sabanish allegedly told officers he “thought it would be okay”.
Sabanish was cited for theft and driving after revocation, and was taken to jail and held for court.
He's still waiting to be charged for this latest incident, but it’s not the first time Sabanish has had a run-in with the law. In April 2011 he was arrested after allegedly stealing an SUV from an Austin gas station while the owner of the vehicle was putting air in the tires.
Sabanish then reportedly robbed a convenience store near Dexter and led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase.
The chase ended when the SUV crashed near the Mower-Dodge County line.
Sabanish was later convicted of robbery, motor vehicle theft and fleeing an officer.
He was sentenced to 120 days in jail, 10 years probation and 100 hours of community service.
