(ABC 6 News) - A Rochester man, who allegedly shot his granddaughter by accident during what he thought was a burglary, has been identified by friends and members of his church.
They identify the shooter as Stan Wilkinson, a pastor at the 7th Day Adventist Church in Rochester.
The incident happened just before 11 o’clock Monday night at a home in the 2400 block of East River Road NE.
The Rochester Police Department says the 61-year-old homeowner and his wife were sleeping when he woke up to a noise at the front door. The homeowner then grabbed his 9 millimeter handgun and went to investigate.
He fired what appears to be two shots. One of them striking his 16-year-old granddaughter.
The granddaughter had been living with her grandparents and had been home when the couple went to bed.
She was taken to St. Marys, where doctors say they thought she'd survive. But her condition is unknown at this time.
Police said the homeowner was extremely shaken. The incident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.
