(ABC 6 News) -- A 16-year-old Rochester girl is recovering after being shot in the neck by her own grandfather.
"They basically said that she got shot and she's in the hospital in critical condition," said Kacey Jensen, a friend of the victim.
It's something that nobody expects to hear; your friend has been shot. But that's exactly what Jensen was told as she sat in class Tuesday.
"It's really sad because I don't think she's the kind of person who deserved to go through something like that," said Jensen.
The shooting happened around 11:00 Monday night. Police say Stan Wilkinson, a local pastor, heard a noise at his door and shot two times. He unknowingly hit his granddaughter.
"At this particular point, it is still early in the investigation," said Captain Brian Winters, with the Rochester Police Department.
Jensen says her friend recently moved to Rochester from out of state.
"She's really nice. She's really outgoing like she's real easy to talk to I like, hanging out with her. She's funny," said Jensen.
"It's almost like a member of your family and we take it very seriously and we want to provide any type of support we can to the family and also support for the students that are dealing with the situation," said Rochester Public Schools Superintendent Michael Munoz. He says grief counselors will be available to help students cope with what's happened. He also adds that the district is pulling together.
"We're here to do anything that we can to assist them and of course our thoughts and prayers go out to them and to the family and we're really hoping for a speedy recovery for the student," said Munoz.
"My math class is making cards for tomorrow, so hopefully like I feel like she'll be ok, from what I've heard. I'm still hoping for the best," said Jensen.
The girl was taken to Saint Marys Hospital, but we are told there is no information on her when we called for a condition update.
Her friends, however, tell us she is recovering. And as for her grandfather, Stan Wilkinson, the Olmsted County Attorney's Office said it's still too early to know if there will be any charges.
