Mix-It-Up Bar Essentials for New Year’s

On New Year’s Eve, festive beverages in moderation can be a fun addition to the evening.   Hy-Vee Registered Dietitian, Jen Haugen, will share with you some creative ways to make festive beverages for New Year celebrations that the whole family can enjoy.

Moderation
The actual serving size for an alcoholic beverage depends on the type of drink. A standard drink is any drink that contains 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol. This is equal to:

  • 12 ounces of a beer or wine cooler
  • 8 ounces of malt liquor
  • 5 ounces of table wine
  • 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits such as gin, vodka, whiskey, etc.


If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Moderate drinking means up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks for men. Generally, anything more than moderate drinking can be harmful to your health. And some people, or people in certain situations, shouldn't drink at all. If you have questions or concerns, talk with your doctor or healthcare provider.

Well-Stocked Beverage Bar
To make a great "mock-tail," there are a few key things to have on hand.  Make sure you keep your beverage fresh with the following ingredients:

  • Lemon and lime juice – the tart flavor can add a fresh flavor.
  • Fresh lemon, lime and orange wedges to squeeze or zest into a beverage or moisten the rim of a glass.
  • Superfine sugar dissolves easily and makes a nice garnish on the rim of a glass.  Just run the glass rim under the faucet and dip in the sugar.
  • Fresh herbs like basil and mint can add flavor and color.
  • Don’t forget the ice – it makes every drink better.

Making Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is needed to add a little sweetness to beverages on your beverage bar.  Mix equal parts sugar and water; heat until the sugar dissolves.  Your final liquid amount will be equal to the water you have added.

Citrus Fizz
(makes 12 servings, ¾ cup each)

All you need
1 bottle (33.8 ounces) blood orange sparkling cider
¾ cup orange juice
1 cup simple syrup
1-1/2 cups lemon juice
1-1/2 cups lime juice
Superfine sugar (to rim glasses)
Ice, optional

All you do
1.    Blend all ingredients* except superfine sugar together; store in pitcher in refrigerator.  To serve, rim glasses with superfine sugar and pour individual servings.  
2.    This drink does not contain alcohol.   *If you desire alcohol, add 12 to 18 ounces vodka, rum or peach schnapps.

Serve with ice.

Shirley Temple

All you need:
4 cups fresh cherries, pitted
2 liter bottle ginger ale
1 cup pomegranate-cherry juice

All you do:
1.    Thread cherries onto 8 toothpicks, or fill each of 8 tall glasses with 1/2 cup cherries.
2.    In a large pitcher combine ginger ale and pomegranate-cherry juice, stirring well. Pour into glasses, add ice and cherry skewers (if using) and serve.
