(ABC 6 News) -- The new year brought big changes for people everywhere, but for one family in Rochester, 2013 brought with it a new bundle of joy.
As folks across the country anxiously awaited the stroke of midnight last night, a young couple in Rochester was awaiting something else.
“We did watch the ball drop and then he came pretty fast after that,” Laura Shotts said.
Weighing in at six pounds 15 ounces, Ezra Shotts came into the world just before 1:30 a.m. last night, making him the first baby born in Rochester in 2013.
“We were joking that we didn't know whether or not we'd have a tax break baby or a New Year's baby," his mother said.
And while they certainly weren't trying to have the first baby of the year, both parents said the news came as a pleasant surprise.
“We were excited, we thought it just made the day more special," Laura said.
But young Ezra isn't the only one in the family with such a special birthday.
“He shares his birthday with my grandpa, which makes it a little more special,” Laura said.
And not only were his parents looking forward to today, but sister Evie has been eagerly awaiting the family's newest addition.
“She’s pretty excited,” dad Zeke said. “She's been talking about him for a while now and anticipating the day."
But while Evie was able to get some sleep, the new parents weren't so lucky.
“Running on adrenaline and caffeine right now, but feeling okay," Zeke said.
The parents say young Ezra is healthy, alert, and already sleeps more than his older sister.
And while Rochester's first new year baby was a boy, Austin got a girl. At 12:09 Tuesday afternoon, baby Emma was born to Brenna Baumann and Caleb Lack.
