(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The flu this season is targeting people of all ages, but one vulnerable age group is being hit the hardest.
More than 1,100 people have been hospitalized with the flu this season and 60% are over the age of 65. The Minnesota Department of Health is also reporting outbreaks in long term facilities. There have been 28 just this week. None of the outbreaks have been in the area, but assisted living facilities are taking extra precautions.
Many are posting signs warning of the flu outbreak. They are also asking visitors that are sick to postpone their visit. If someone does come who might not be feeling well, they are asking that they wear a mask, and of course lots of hand washing.
"We just try to be as diligent about keeping things clean, washing our hands, keeping surfaces clean, identifying people who may have been exposed and making sure that they aren't exposing other residents,” said Eric Huntoon of Shorewood Senior Campus.
All of the residents and employees at Shorewood Senior Campus were offered a flu shot this fall.
So far they have only reported one case of the flu.
