(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A Rochester elementary school is one of twelve across the country that is in the running for $10,000 in prize money to help spruce up the school.
The school is St. Pius X, a catholic elementary school in Rochester. One of the students there, Kyle Pido, along with his dad and a company that makes facial tissue are all behind that possible prize money.
It all started with a contest. Scotties facial tissue asked parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from across the country to make and submit a video about trees. So Rochester 3rd grader Kyle Pido and his dad, did just that.
"We wanted to do a news thing and then we wanted to go to LaCrosse and then we did like explaining what trees can do," said Pido.
They entered a video into the contest, and now Kyle is one of 12 finalists in the running for the grand prize.
"I was pretty really excited because we get $5,000 and a tablet," said Pido.
That $5,000 and the tablet are only part of it. If Kyle's video wins, he also gets a trip for four to the Grand Canyon, and his school gets $10,000 and a tree-planting event.
"We really have a need for more playground equipment here," said Don Valentine, the principal of St. Pius X.
What would a nine-year-old do with $5,000?
"Some to save in my bank account and probably get a new video game," said Pido.
While the prizes would be great, Kyle says he has learned a lot from his experience about the importance of trees.
"I never knew that trees suck up pollution and give us oxygen. And the roots are really big. And they give us paper to use for like tests and stuff," said Pido.
"I love the video. It's great. Regardless, if we don't get anything out of it, it's been well worth it because just to me, the first and foremost, the thing of value has been the experience that Kyle has had," said Valentine.
"It's a memory not to forget," said Pido.
In order for Kyle to get that grand prize, he needs votes.
