The Metro's mild forecast won't last long. Single digit and sub-zero temperatures are expected into Sunday, leaving local heating companies planning for a busy weekend.

Greg Ryan, owner of Ryan Plumbing and Heating in St. Paul, says he will have all men on board.

"I anticipate the phones to continuously ring," Ryan said.

With 8 field employees, Ryan expects 30 to 50 calls an hour once the cold hits.

"We're going to be working full time and everybody has been notified. All of our staff has been notified that they are going to be working overtime and into the evening," Ryan said.

There are ways homeowners can look out for their own heating systems before the temperatures drop. Ryan recommends keeping doors closed and putting blankets under loose doorways or windows.

"Let's be careful with making sure the heat stays in, the cold stays out. Any noises that originate from your heating system, have them looked at right away," Ryan said.

Ryan also recommends turning your thermostat up slightly before the cold arrives so it does not have to work as hard or long during the cold snap.
