(ABC 6 NEWS) -- When Nick Brehmer found out he was a state finalist for the "Triple-A" award, given to four student-athletes who excel in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the arts, he was simply shocked.
"I was just really honored that the administration would choose me," said the Austin high school senior. "And then when I was called down to find out I was a state finalist, I thought that I might have been in trouble or something because I completely had it down in my head that I wouldn't make it past the sections."
Nick is the captain of the Packer soccer team, tennis team, and the Austin swim team that placed third in the Big 9 Conference over the weekend.
"We won an event, we had some state qualifying times that don't count in this meet but it's a good confidence builder to swim those times," said Austin head coach Lynn Gulbrandson. "We're pleased with our finish in there, it's quite a bit up from last year and that was our goal."
Besides just the team accomplishment, Nick took first in the 100-yard freestyle and helped the 200-yard freestyle relay take second. Nick anchor's the relays, a spot he loves to be in.
"I'm definitely competitive so that's why, with these big meets, there's always someone right next to you and I'll always push myself a little bit harder to get those times," said the soon-to-be college swimmer. "And although it's a lot of pressure to anchor all the relays, I love it."
"The confidence that a relay picks up knowing that he's going to anchor that relay and they know just how tough he is and determined he is, it just makes every relay a little bit better," said Gulbrandson.
