Rep. Debra Hilstrom, DFL Brooklyn Center, will officially unveil the alternative gun bill Wednesday morning at the Capitol.

Besides making it easier to prosecute people who are not allowed to have guns, the bill requires the state to immediately transfer data on people who are civilly committed or otherwise deemed as mentally ill to a database federally licensed firearms dealers use to complete background checks.

Hilstrom says the bill has more than seventy co-sponsors. It is also backed by the National Rifle Association.

However, critics like Rep. Michael Paymar, DFL Saint Paul, says Hilstrom's bill guts the bill he introduced last week which advocates universal background checks. Hilstrom's bill does not. Paymar chairs the House Public Safety Committee and says his bill will get a hearing.

At a news conference Wednesday morning at the Capitol, Hilstrom will be joined by lawmakers and law enforcement officers to reveal additional detail about the bill.
