(ABC 6 News) -- More than 50 days after a newborn baby was taken away by Mower County officials, he's back in his parent's arms.
The child, Rico Nagel, was born with HIV. His mom, Lindsey Nagel, has HIV as well. She contracted it as an infant through a blood transfusion, and she then passed it on to Rico.
Lindsey hasn't taken HIV medications herself since she was four years old. She says she's perfectly healthy.
Court records indicate Rico was removed from his home because of concerns his parents wanted to discontinue his HIV medications as well.
"At the same time we know we're not doctors. We wouldn't just stop giving him the drugs. We're not willing to risk that. We went in search of somebody who would say Rico doesn't need to be on these drugs," said John Martinez, Rico's father.
Rico was allowed to come home, and stay home because his parents agreed to be monitored closely by health officials.
In April, the court will decide whether to end the supervision.
