(ABC 6 News) -- The world watched as the news of a new pope emerged out of Vatican City just after 2:00 local time this afternoon.

Local parishioners filed in to St. Augustine Church in Austin before their 5:15 mass, most praying in silence as they waited for mass to begin.

We spoke to Father Steffes who said one of the biggest challenges facing the new pope is to try and win people back to the catholic faith. He said the choice will appeal to the large number of catholics living in Latin American countries.

"They're really a great population of the church right now and have a lot of the passion, the spirit, and I think they will help, along with this new holy father, to really set the church on fire again," said Jim Steffes, Pastor at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
