(ABC 6 News) -- We're now hearing from the second highest ranking catholic in southeast Minnesota on the election of a new pope.
Monsignor Richard Colletti says he's very excited about Pope Francis the first, and hopeful for the future of the catholic church.
He says it was surprising how fast the decision was made and to hear Cardinal Bergoglio, or now Pope Francis' name announced.
Monsignor Colleti says Bergoglio wasn't one of, what they call papabile or top runner, but says he is familiar with his work and that he was selected by god to do this.
"I have heard of him and knew his writings. he is known for a lot of social justice programs in Argentina and he has a great relationship with his priest," said Rev. Monsignor Richard Colletti, Diocese of Winona.
Monsignor Colietti says Bergoglio's speech showed how genuine he is, asking the crowd to first pray for him as he begins this incredible journey.
