(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A local elementary school brought history to life today with a unique event.

Southgate elementary's "walking wax museum" gave fifth grade students a chance to dress up and act as famous historical figures.
Students researched a famous figure and had to present what they learned when others pressed an imaginary button on their hand.
Characters ranged from Martin Luther King to John Wilkes Booth, and teachers said the event helped students go beyond the text books and really interact with history.
"It's a different perspective on learning. It gives them an opportunity to enjoy it and actually probably remember it for a longer period of time," said ?5th grade teacher Jer Osgood.
The school provided the research materials, while the kids, and probably the parents, came up with the costumes.
