DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa attorney general is pushing for a bill that would expand the collection of DNA samples to include people convicted of less serious crimes.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says Wednesday the proposal would help police solve more crimes. It would add adults convicted of an aggravated misdemeanors for offenses such as theft and assault to the federal DNA databank.

The Iowa Senate will likely debate the bill next week. It has already passed in the House on a 79 to 18 vote.

The American Civil Liberties Union opposes the bill, saying it's an invasion of privacy and could prompt too much DNA profiling in the future.
