(ABC 6 News) -- After hours of debate and two votes the senate passed their omnibus tax bill Monday night. The bill includes several tax hikes as well as the funding for DMC.
If at first you don't succeed try again. That’s' just what senate democrats did Monday to pass the senate omnibus tax bill.
After the bill failed to the first time democrats quickly asked for a re-vote saying that one senator did not vote. After more debate this time it passed with a vote of 35 to 31.
Opponents of the bill were concerned about the number of tax increases included. One senator called the bill a tax attack on Minnesotans. The bill raises income taxes on top earners, increases tobacco taxes, and expands the sales tax to clothing and other services.
Our local senators votes centered around of course the needed funding for DMC.
Senator Senjem voted for the bill both times saying DMC is too important. While Senator Nelson voted against the bill saying while she wants to support DMC she could not support the amount of new taxes in the bill.
The bill will now go to conference committee to be combined with the house tax bill.
The Rochester city council declared Monday that they are in support of the house bill’s plan for DMC.
