(ABC 6 News) -- For the first time ever a professional athlete still playing has come out as gay.

Jason Collins made that announcement saying in an article for Sports Illustrated, "I'm a 34-year-old NBA center, I'm black and I'm gay."

Collins has played for six NBA teams in 12 seasons, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, finishing this last season with the Washington Wizards.

Collins is now the first openly gay active player in a major American team sport. We talked with Nick Fatis coach of the Rochester Ice Hawks hockey team about this major announcement.

"They come in all shapes and sizes and hopefully this allows the young adults I coach if any of them are on that path to be able to walk a littler stronger and a litter clearer," said Rochester Ice Hawks coach Nick Fatis.
