(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A deadly car crash at a dangerous intersection Thursday night. 74-year-old Sharon Hull of Northfield was killed when her car was hit by a van at the intersection of Highway 52 and County Road 9. It happened around 6:30 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol website, Hull was driving eastbound on County Road 9, when she crossed the southbound lanes of Highway 52. She continued to cross the northbound lanes when she was hit by the van. This latest deadly crash comes less than a month after a meeting was held to address the dangerous intersection.
That meeting discussed several fatal and bad crashes at the intersection. But the solution, a reduced conflict intersection or j-turn, didn’t go over so well. “We came back to the office and regrouped and decided to take another look at what our proposed solution was reduced conflict intersection and see if there's something more to do,” said Kristin Kammueller of MNDOT.
That something depends on what kind of money they receive and how they can work within their foot print.
"To see if there's something that we can do to accommodate the slow moving vehicles, like the farm equipment and semis, but then also get the safety improvements that we need at this intersection,” said Kammueller.
MNDOT says over the next few months they’ll look over what can be done. Construction on anything isn’t likely to come this summer. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t working to get something done.
"This intersection has always been it has been a top priority for us so as unfortunate as last night’s crash was. It doesn't get a higher priority. It's always been a high priority for us,” said Kammueller.
In the meantime, when approaching the intersection, “Anytime there's highway speeds you have to make sure you cross one set of lanes. Stop in the median, yield, and take your time to look both directions. Make sure no one’s coming and then proceed with caution,” said Trooper Tom Wright of the Minnesota State Patrol.
MNDOT is working with Goodhue County to make changes to the intersection.
