(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Hockey or baseball?

That was the question Jason Samuelson had to answer before the end of his senior year, and the Lourdes Eagle went with baseball for one big reason.

"Once I made my mind up that I wanted to go to college right away, and it's really hard to do that through hockey, baseball presented better opportunities for me," Samuelson said.

The winner of the Samuelson sweepstakes was Iowa.  He'll play for the Hawkeyes, who only have three established outfielders, all of whom are upperclassmen.

"He went down for his showcase, and obviously they were impressed with his speed, and his ability to lead off, and his ability to go get the ball, because he can definitely go get the ball," Lourdes coach Dan Herold said.

This year, Herold has played with his lineup a bit, so instead of hitting third, like he did last summer and early this season, Samuelson has spent the bulk of his playing time leading off.

"Having Jason back up in the leadoff (spot) puts a lot of pressure at the start of the game and any time we roll over the lineup, so they know he's coming," Herold said.

Samuelson has his Eagles deep into the winner's bracket of Section 1AA, and he likes his team's chances the rest of the way.

"Especially since we've got to get beat twice against teams that we've already seen once," Samuelson said. "I think it'll be pretty hard to lose twice for us."
