(ABC 6 News) -- What was supposed to be a night of celebrating turned into a frantic call to 911 over the weekend. In the end, a man was dead.
Authorities say someone was shooting a gun at an explosive target, and there was a group of about 30 people behind the shooter watching. One of those was 47-year-old Utica man Jeff Taylor who was killed.
He had stopped by a farm where the party took place, with his two sons to check on some cattle. They were invited to stay for the party. They were watching the person shooting the target. When the explosive target, called Tanerite, was hit; some of the shrapnel Taylor the stomach.
"It was kind of the ultimate set of unfortunate circumstances. The difficult thing for us is that somebody lost their life. And they lost their life because of something another human being did," said Fillmore County Sheriff, Daryl Jensen.
Taylor was pronounced dead before he made it to the hospital. The case is being sent to the County Attorney's Office. He will review it, and make the decision from there on whether or not the shooter will face charges.
