MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The mayor of Minneapolis has announced plans to officiate at the city's first same-sex weddings as soon as gay marriage is legal in Minnesota.

Mayor R.T. Rybak said Thursday he will begin officiating at same-sex weddings in the Rotunda of Minneapolis City Hall just after midnight on Aug. 1.

Rybak introduced the first two same-sex Minneapolis couples he will marry - Margaret Miles and Cathy ten Broeke, and Al Giraud and Jeff Isaacson.

After the first two couples are wed, the mayor will marry another 38 couples until 6 a.m. on Aug.1. Those couples already are signed up.

The celebration will be very Minnesotan. Betty Crocker of Minneapolis-based General Mills is donating cakes, and Minneapolis musician Jeremy Messersmith will perform.
