(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's going to be a couple of weeks before the next school year begins at Riverland Community College, but Monday was the first day for Adenuga Atewologun.
“You can just tell that people have that passion for the college, for the students."
On Monday, Doctor Adenuga Atewologun became Riverland's new president.
"I see a fit between my values and the values of Riverland," Dr. Atewologun told us.
It starts with helping students succeed.
"Help them set meaningful goals, help them see how they can achieve it."
And with tuition rates going up in a college system that has always marketed itself as the affordable choice in higher education:
"We also need to work harder as a college to make sure we attract more funding and scholarships for our students and even those who are working."
Since 2009, Doctor Atewologun has been an administrator at Prairie State College in Illinois. He has a doctorate in agricultural engineering from the University of Illinois.
"I'm evidence-based,” he explained. “I like data, I like to use the information as input to make sure that the decisions we make are actually meaningful.
I don't believe we should do the same thing over and over if we're not getting the results we want."
And outside the new president's office, the Riverland marquee is flashing the school's motto.
"Success starts here. Everywhere it is contagious. we want to be part of the success of every student who walks through our doors."
