Sights on state

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "Going into the season, I think a lot of people thought we would be down a little bit because we had 6 seniors that graduated last year," Clear Lake head coach Seth Thompson said.

Not many people thought the Clear Lake Lions would be one of the best teams in the state this year, but right now, they're on fire.

"I'll be honest, not many people expected much of us from how last year went to this year because of how many kids we graduated," said Jerry Kockler, a senior on the Lions' squad. "We just came out and played our hardest and strung together a bunch of wins."

A bunch of wins as in 20 wins. Before a loss on June 26th, the Clear Lake Lions had won 20 games in a row. A win streak like that is not easy to do in baseball.

"It's amazing what kids are able to do when they're confident and when they have a plan and they stick to it," said Thompson

"Everyone's relaxed when we play, we just go out and have fun. When we won 20 straight games, no one was thinking about the win streak at all until it ended and then we realized 'oh wow, we just won 20 straight games,'" said Kockler. "We just went out, had fun, and if you're having fun when you're playing baseball you're going to play pretty well."

The Lions don't like to talk about state rankings or their success, but if they continue down the path they're on right now, they could very well find themselves in the state championship.
