Working, Playing, Beating the Heat

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- With Tuesday's high temperatures, it may have been a nice day to stay inside, maybe with the air conditioning cranked, but not everyone could do that.

With hot and muggy conditions, and a heat advisory in effect, being outdoors Tuesday was less than desirable.

"I don't think you ever get used to it," said Charles Johnston, the owner of C-n-J Construction. He is all to familiar with the effects of the sun.

"I've actually had heat stroke before. Basically I was on a roof and started feeling shaky and dizzy and weak," remembered Johnston.

So now, he takes every precaution; drinking even more water, knowing that a lot of it comes right back out.

"Just try to shelter ourselves obviously sunscreen and lots of water, keep the fluids in, try to find as much shade as possible," said Johnston.

While Charles has to be outside because of his job, there are others who chose to be outside. Some of them participating in Zumba on the Plaza.

"The heat just adds that extra sweat factor to it and just wears you out," said Sara Pennington and Carol Burken.

On a hot day like Tuesday, I thought, what's better than a nice ice cream cone. According to the owner of Flapdoodle's in Rochester, I'm not the only one.

"We have a drive through, so we notice when it's really hot and humid there's an increase in business through that," said owner Matt Tierney.

So whether you're cooling off with the sweet stuff, shaking it on the plaza, or just trying to survive a day at the office; the message is the same.

"Don't overdo it," said Johnston.

If you're interested, Zumba on the Plaza takes place every Tuesday from 12:00-1:30pm.
