(ABC 6 News) -- Police have a man in custody following a fatal stabbing in Mason City Thursday night. They say the man responsible is the victim’s son.
Mason City police responded to a call on the city’s southwest side around 8:45 p.m. Thursday evening. When they arrived they found one man dead and arrested his son a short while later.
Authorities charged 42-year-old Thomas Barlas Jr. with first degree murder after police say he stabbed and killed his 73-year-old father, Tom Barlas Sr.
Other than a couple speeding violations, Barlas Jr. does not have a criminal history.
Still, some folks in the neighborhood say they're not surprised.
“They seemed to get along alright in town, but there has been some issues forever,” said Ron Jenkins, who lives a few houses down from the Barlas’. “It was a surprise that it occurred on our street, not a surprise that controversy evolved around the Barlas.'"
The Barlas family has operated a number of bars and restaurants in Mason City over the past few decades.
The Mason City Police Department is not releasing any more information at this time but ABC 6 will continue to follow this story and bring you any new details as they become available.
