Civil War Encampment
(ABC 6 News)-- A local town that has strong ties to the Civil War, brought history back to life this afternoon. It seems time has stood still for more than a century in Historic Forestville in Fillmore County.
“Four score and seven years ago…” A speech that has stood the test of time. The Gettysburg Address is just one way Historic Forestville brought history back to life.
"I think it puts everything into perspective as to what went on in the 150, 200 years," said Ken Gunderson after attending the event.
This town isn't just any old place to re-invent the past.
"It was a Civil War muster point right here in Forestville back in the 1860s. So there is a history between Forestville and the Civil War," said Blake Coleman, Minnesota Historical Society.
Built in the 1850's, it's a town soldiers came before getting shipped off to war. Cannons fire in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Battle Of Gettysburg.
"Minnesota played a very important part in the Civil War, they were at Gettysburg and they were in almost every battle, so we're paying homage to Minnesota history," said Coleman
"There's something about learning about history by being there by meeting the people who actually are interpreting what life," said Mary Whalen, Minnesota Historical Society.
Preserving the past, to teach younger generations the sacrifices that were made during a defining moment in our nation’s history.
"It’s another piece of history," said Gunderson.
Historic Forestville is open for people to tour every Saturday, but this is the first time they've re-enacted a Civil War military camp.
