MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Philip Nelson is back for his sophomore season at Minnesota with the bonus of seven games started last year.
No other quarterback on the roster has appeared in a college game, following MarQueis Gray's graduation and Max Shortell's decision to transfer. Nelson was a well-regarded recruit, so given his stature and his experience the job is clearly his entering the fall.
Coach Jerry Kill has insisted that redshirt freshman Mitch Leidner is in competition with Nelson. And even if Nelson is the starter, Kill has a long history of playing multiple quarterbacks during the course of a season. Injuries happen, for one. And given the zone read running plays used frequently by the Gophers, the quarterback takes plenty of hits. So Kill wants to keep the starter fresh.
