(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A historic morning for same-sex couples across the state, now that gay marriage is legal in Minnesota. Dozens of couples tied the knot early Thursday morning.
Local couple Amy and Holli Petrich of Wykoff said their I-do's at midnight.
With family members packing into the chapel, it started like any other wedding.
But at the stroke of midnight, the wedding of Amy and Holli was a first for the Chapel of Love at the Mall of America.
"We knew right away we were going to be together forever, I told my parents that I was going to marry her," said Amy Petrich.
When Amy and Holli got engaged at the Mall of America in April they didn't even know if it would ever be legal for them to walk down the aisle.
"We love each other the same as any other couple does, so we just hope everybody gets to have that, love is love," said Holli Petrich.
With same-sex marriage now legal, the couple wanted to tie the knot as soon as possible.
"That was the original plan, we wanted to do it the first day it was legal and everything just fell into place," said Holli Petrich..
The first of its kind ceremony was emotional for many.
"I'm just so happy, happy, happy tears," said Jennifer Dittbermer.
"I wish them the best and I know that they'll have a great life together," said Ben Nunemaker.
For Holli and Amy it's dream come true.
"We're happy, it's surreal like we've been waiting for this moment and now it's here," said Holli Petrich.
With both signatures on the marriage license the ceremony ended like any other.
Amy and Holli picked the colors for their wedding of blue and orange after the “Vote No” campaign of last election. They believe its success is part of the reason they were able to get married.
