(ABC 6 NEWS) -- There is less than one month until the first day of school, and construction has finally begun on a brand new school in Dodge County.
Right now, all you can hear at 601 South Street in West Concord, is the sound of construction workers. But pretty soon, that sound will change into the voices of elementary school kids.
"I'm pretty excited about it to be honest," Corky Buckingham is one of the founders of the West Concord Public Charter School. The school has been in the works for the past five years.
"Small towns really do well when they have a school in town," said Buckingham. He says a certain enrollment target had to be met in order for work to begin. But now, he hopes that the completed school will attract even more people.
"As soon as the building goes there are those that are waiting to see the building, so they can see it, smell it, touch it and then commit their kids to it," said Buckingham.
Lisa Westlund has already committed her daughter Alaina to the school.
"I like the fact that it's a small school, it's a community school," said Westlund.
While they're busy getting ready for the school year, Lisa and Corky both hope this school will make the sense of community in West Concord even stronger.
"People around here, they really want their students to achieve and be able to move on to college someday and we are hoping to offer a different choice," said Lisa.
"This is not a dream anymore. It's not idle talk. It's the real deal," said Corky.
The grand opening of the school will be August 28th. The first day of school is September 3rd.
