One lane of the Highway 13 bridge that spans Interstate 35W in Burnsville is closed Monday after painters found damage on the bridge.
I-35W northbound in that area and two ramps connecting Highway 13 to 35W were already closed for the weekend for scheduled construction.
Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation said they closed part of the bridge as a precaution.
"Something hit the bridge... damaged it, damaged the concrete. We found the damage- we're going to (as a precaution) close the bridge before it becomes a bigger problem, and get out there and fix it," said MnDOT Director of Communications Kevin Gutknecht.
The southernmost lane on Highway 13 is closed Monday. That doesn't leave enough room for drivers coming southbound on 35W to go north on Highway 13, so that ramp is closed too.
Last time this happened, it took about a week to repair.
There could be additional lane closures on 35W while the fix is made.
MnDOT says the bridge was last inspected in June 2012.
