(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The man known as "Big Bopper JR" has passed away Wednesday, according to the official Big Bopper website.

Jay Richardson, the son of J.P. Rochardson, traveled the world carrying on the legacy of his father.

Laurie Lietz-Surf, Surf Ballroom executive director told ABC 6, "He was very instrumental in promoting his Dad’s legacy.  He was always so friendly and approachable, (was) definitely part of the Surf Ballroom family. He considered Clear Lake his second home.”

Jay never got to know his dad because he was born some 80 days after his father was killed in a plane crash in Mason City, Iowa, after a performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa - a crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and became known as "The Day The Music Died."

Jay is survived by his wife Patty, sons Jay Jr. and Thomas, daughter Ashlyn, her husband Kevin Ray Adams, and grandchildren, including granddaughters Hadley and Justine, and grandson Jimmy.

Lietz-Surf added, “He was invited to come back to the Surf for the 2014 Winter Dance Party and will be greatly missed.”

Plans are being made to remember the Little Bopper next February at the Surf Ballroom.
