Austin firefighters were called out Tuesday morning after a fire at an apartment building was called in by one of the residents.

A couple in a third floor apartment at 805 4th Street NW reported smoke in their rooms at about 12:30 a.m.

Austin Fire Department Commander Terry Petersen tells ABC 6 News that his crews put out the fire fairly quickly, but electrical issues caused by the blaze left other residents at the complex with safety concerns.

11 adults and one child from 9 different units were evacuated and are now being helped by the Freeborn-Mower Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The fire left extensive damage in the apartment were it originated.

No cause has been determined as to how the fire started.

Petersen said it is under investigation but not thought to be suspicious.
