(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede was one of many on hand for the opening of the People’s Co-op Tuesday.
The Co-op is a grocery store with healthy options and outdoor dining. There are only People’s Co-ops. The other is in La Crosse, WI.
The plan is to connect the Co-op and the apartments above it to UMR, Mayo Clinic and Peace Plaza.
“When you look at that building, don’t just look at how beautiful the building is. Turn around and imagine how beautiful the street’s gonna be,” said Jon Eckhoff from the Rochester Downtown Alliance.
Mayor Brede thinks the plan will bring in plenty of money.
“I just gotta believe it’s gonna be a gold mine,” said Brede.
The president/CEO of the Co-op believes it helps give people nutritious options.
“We decided that a move downtown would help us reach more people. We want to get more quality food, health food into people’s hands,” said Michelle Schry.
Customers are enjoying the food so far as well.
“Every food I’ve had is delicious,” said Lynda Sharbrough.
The Mayor summed up the thoughts of many who walked in today.
“This place is impressive,” said Brede.
Just the beginning of a master plan to make the city itself, more impressive.
