The 19-year-old woman who died after falling from the sixth-floor window of a University of Minnesota dorm has been identified.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the woman as Stephanie Ann Lehr.
University of Minnesota Police responded to Yudof Hall on the Minneapolis campus just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Lehr was taken to a hospital, where she died Sunday morning.
According to the medical examiner, Lehr died from multiple blunt force injuries due to the fall.
According to University of Minnesota Police, the woman, later identified as Lehr, and another person took the screen off the window to climb onto the rooftop. They are calling Lehr's death an accident.
According to University of Minnesota Deputy Police Chief Chuck Miner, Lehr appears to have tripped trying to get from the window to a nearby rooftop ledge, or from the ledge back to the window.
Lehr is not a student at the university. She was visiting a U of M student.
Police say alcohol was in the room, but they are waiting on toxicology tests to say whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the fall.
Police say they have never encountered students using rooftops, like the one at Yudof Hall, for recreation.
The U of M released the following statement:
"The University of Minnesota community is deeply saddened by the news of a young woman who fell from an upper floor in Yudof Hall during a visit to the Twin Cities campus on Saturday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. A tragic accident such as this is especially heartbreaking as we begin the school year. We hope students will use this as a reminder to be protective and caring of their friends and classmates.
University Police continue to look into the circumstances surrounding this terrible accident. We ask that the privacy of those involved be respected in this time of sadness."
The U of M says counseling will be available for anyone who feels they need it.
