Heat Returns with Little to No Rain

It may be an overused term, but there really is no other way to explain the past two days and the next two days except a roller coaster. Let’s start back at the end of last week. Thursday’s high temperatures were right around average in the upper 70s (78º officially). Friday the warmth pushed in with highs in the upper 80s and even warmer on Saturday with many places seeing the 90s. That ended the first hill on our roller coaster. Sunday we reached the first valley with highs struggling to reach the upper 70s but a larger hill is on the way for Monday. Heat advisories have already been issued in anticipation of a dangerous heat and feel like temperatures pushing close to 100º, warmer to the west.

Now, the heat wouldn’t be so bad if we actually had a little rain to go along with it. The last time we saw significant rain (>0.10”) was on August 22nd, this was also the day over 4” of rain fell in downtown Rochester causing flash flooding. Since July 1st our area has a precipitation deficit of 5.25”. It may seem like forever ago, but remember how wet the first half of 2013 was? In fact, even though the summer has stayed dry, we still have a precipitation surplus of 9.67” for the year and are only 4.65” away from breaking the top 10 wettest years on record.
