(ABC 6 News) -- An Austin man charged with sexually abusing a little girl pleaded guilty in a Mower County courtroom on Monday in a deal his lawyers hopes will help him avoid going to prison.

According to court documents, 45-year-old Gary Hegna abused the girl over a 5 year period, starting when the child was just 7 years old.

Besides forcing himself on the girl, court documents show Hegna also made the girl wear costumes and watch adult movies.

As part of his guilty plea, a petition was filed asking for Hegna to avoid a 3-year prison term. It would, however, require him to register as a sex offender and undergo psycho-sexual treatment.

The petition doesn't mean Hegna will avoid prison as a judge will ultimately decide his sentencing.

A hearing for that is set for January 17th.
