DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Thousands of people in and around Des Moines remain without power following powerful thunderstorms in the area.
Des Moines television station KCCI reports that nearly 10,000 MidAmerican Energy customers remained without power early Friday morning, mainly in Des Moines, Ankeny, West Des Moines, Johnston, Waukee and Urbandale.
MidAmerican officials say they expect to have power restored to everyone by Friday night.
Several schools are closed or delayed due to power outages, and numerous trees and power lines are down throughout the area. A part of the South Prairie Elementary roof in Grimes was torn off by high winds.
No serious injuries have been reported.
The National Weather Service says winds from the storms that raked the area Thursday reached up to 70 mph.
