(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It was just over a month ago a woman was stabbed to death in Northwood, Iowa.
Now, the Iowa Division Of Criminal Investigation is trying to determine what caused man's death after he was taken into custody.
It happened around 11:30 Sunday night when a Worth County Sheriff's deputy was called to a house on the north side of Northwood on a report of a possible domestic assault.
“He responded to the residence, heard a female yelling and screaming for help. He entered the house and he found the male suspect beating up a female victim," explained Mike Krapfl of the Iowa DCI.
“The only thing I really saw was Rhonda being carried out on the stretcher and they flew her to Rochester," said witness Jill Stucky.
Family members and witness have identified the victim at Rhonda Schukei. Additional deputies arrived on the scene and were able to subdue the suspect.
"Trying to determine what happened during that time frame, but he did become unresponsive while he was handcuffed," said the DCIs Mike Krapfl.
“I saw them doing CPR up inside the house, and they continued doing CPR for another 35 - 40 minutes," witness Jill Stucky told us.
Efforts to revive the suspect were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
Rhonda Schukei is being treated for stab wounds and blunt force injuries.
"It's my understanding he had a personal relationship with her, so this was not something that was random. He did know the victim," DCI special agent Mike Krapfl said.
“There's a little sense of anxiety and fear, especially when you live in a house full of kids," Northwood resident Chad Stucky told us.
He moved back to Northwood this weekend after ten years away. "You always feel a place is immune, but no place is really safe."
