(ABC 6 News) -- The search for Austin's new fire chief is progressing slowly.
On Wednesday, the Austin Fire Department held an open house in honor of national fire prevention week. As kids and parents learned more about the department, firefighters say they have yet to learn when they can expect a replacement for outgoing Chief Mickey Healey.
In the meantime, they're doing the best they can.
"We just had eight of our newest part-timers come online yesterday, so we're pretty much up to full staff," Commander Terry Petersen, who is one of the finalists for the job, said. "So we get a chief in here, and we can just start moving forward again."
Officials say they're currently conducting background checks for the final three candidates, and they hope to have a selection sometime in the next few weeks.
