ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The legislative auditor says he shares Republican legislators' concerns about a new online voter registration system launched by Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.
In a letter to Legislative Auditor Jim Nobles this week, four top GOP lawmakers accused Ritchie of using "dubious authority" to set up the system without explicit legislative permission.
Nobles points to a nonpartisan analysis which says Ritchie could have followed the lead of top election officials in other states and asked for lawmakers' approval before creating the online system.
The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/18TFRjj ) reports Nobles is adding an audit of the online registration system to his list.
Ritchie says his office drew authority to create the system from a 2000 law that requires state acceptance of electronic signatures as the equivalent of scribbles on paper.
