(ABC 6 News) - A terrible accident Monday took the life of a local man. His wife, newborn baby girl and mother-in-law were all in the car at the time. ABC 6 News anchor, Betsy Singer sat down with a family member tonight and has more on how the community is helping.
You know Laura, any time we report on a fatal accident we know the victims are not just part of a news story... they're someone's son or daughter, husband or wife and friend.
This is 32-year-old Dustin Schultz and newborn baby girl Cheyenne, the day before the accident. He and his wife, Kim, had only been married a year.
It was late Monday afternoon when Dustin was taking his wife, mother-in-law and baby Cheyenne into Rochester when officials say he strayed over the center line on Highway 14, near Eyota, and crashed with another car. Dustin died in that accident. The other three are all okay.
Thursday, Dustin and Kim's church family at Rochester Assembly of God put out the call for support and support began to immediately pour in.
"I just put up a little post on some of our Facebook pages asking the ladies to help and it was like... tons of people responded," said church member Katie Dean.
"She just kept looking at my and saying I'm a 28-year-old widow with a 3-day-old baby. What am I going to do? And she just kept asking that same question over and over," said Kim's cousin, Paula Ellefson. "And the only answer I had, is that you take this one day at a time and trust that God is going to provide whatever you need."
Just today friends and family kind of put the word out that anybody who wanted to help could donate. They also set up a memorial fund, our good friends at Home Federal Bank in Rochester, has put up that memorial fund in Dustin Schultz's name. Any money that gets put into that fund is going to be for Cheyenne and her future. Reporting in the Rochester Newsroom, Betsy Singer, ABC 6 News.
