(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The Austin Public School District has chosen Terry Carlson as its 2013 "Teacher of the Year." It's the district's highest honor.

Carlson teaches "technology education" and "construction occupations" at AHS. He's been a teacher for 25 years.

Carlson says, "I feel surprised. Excited, but surprised. I never expected to receive the award. I mean you come to work and you work hard every day and you work with the kids and try and do the best you can."

Carlson has helped with HyVee's sprouts garden, city holiday decorations, and the dog agility course for police k-9's.

He's now in the running for Minnesota "Teacher of the Year."
