(ABC 6 News) -- After a search lasting several months, the Austin City Council approved a new fire chief tonight.

Rochester Fire Captain James McCoy will take over as fire chief.  He's been a firefighter for over 15 years, starting in Hastings before moving to Missouri and then Rochester.  We spoke with Capt. McCoy who says the Austin Fire Department is headed in the right direction.

"I don't know that they need any huge changes," Capt. McCoy said.  "I'm not there to change everything and make it Rochester fire.  It's going to take me some time to get used to the community."

The City Council voted 5 to 1 to approve Capt. McCoy's hiring.  He will replace Mickey Healey who left in June.
