(ABC 6 News) -- An elderly couple in Rochester is devastated after their neighbor tricked them out of almost a million dollars.

Carolyn Cassar admitted to taking roughly $840,000. Although she asked for no prison time, the judge gave her five years behind bars. We talked to the couple who thought they were helping a friend in need, they say they are devastated.

Court documents show she’d say things like her heat is getting turned off, or her daughter died, and even that her ex-husband was murdered. This went on for about 5 years, consuming the couples' life savings. The husband says they lived frugally, as he grew up during the Great Depression. This money was supposed to help them live independently and to go to their kids and their families. They said they gave to her because they remembered what it was like to be in need.

The two were so devastated, they didn't want to go through with an interview Tuesday, but say they may share more of their story with us at a later date.

Cassar was released following sentencing and was ordered to report to custody on December 13th.
