Spend Iowans' Tax Credit on Roads, Lawmaker Says

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A key senator says Iowans' new $54 tax credit would be better spent to fix the state's crumbling roads and bridges.

The Department of Revenue announced last week that many Iowans will be eligible for the credit when they file 2013 taxes. The department says $120 million is available in the Iowa Taxpayers Trust Fund for the 2013 tax year. The credits are part of a tax relief package passed this year.

State Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, is chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, and he says a more strategic use of the money would be to "turn the Taxpayer Trust Fund into the taxpayer road fund."

Bolkcom expects his proposal will be debated in the 2014 legislative session.
