Home security alarms can keep you and your belongings safe, but when one sounds for no reason it can cost the police department.
Now the City of Savage is taking steps to drive down the number of false alarms. The number one calls for service in the city are false alarms.
Savage Police created a new program to better educate homeowners and businesses. Also starting the first of the year a new ordinance will increase fines for false alarms.
A first offense will cost $25, additional violations could climb up to $500.
Other cities have started similar programs with great success. Elk River's false alarms dropped by more than 30 percent.
