(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Hannah Baratz has spent so much of her life in the water you would think she has gills.

"I started swimming lessons when I was three years old and then I joined club swimming when I was six and I have been doing it ever since," Baratz said.

As a freshman, Baratz joined the varsity team at Mayo.

"Hannah is one of the fastest swimmers I have ever coached," head coach Juliet Parlette said.

But that is no surprise when you hear how far Hannah swims every day.

"She does a lot of yardage. She does 7 to 8 thousand yards a practice in about two and a half hours," Parlette said.

That's almost 4 miles per practice, but each year, all those miles pay off.

"Hannah makes it to state every year," Parlette said.

This year, she placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle.

"I was really, really happy about that because last year I made it to consolation and going from 10th or 11th to fifth is just so different and so cool and awesome," Baratz said.

And in the process, she reached one of her season goals.

"I wanted to break 24 seconds in my 50 free and around 52 seconds in my 100 free, and I actually made all of those goals, so I was really happy how the season went," Baratz said.

She also swam the 100 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

"She starts both our relays and she does an amazing job. She really just puts it out there and puts us in a good place every single time," Parlette said.

That might have something to do with the people she swims with.

"My best friends are the swimmers I swim with every single day and they turn out to be like sisters so it's really fun," Baratz said.
